Each holding developed its own distinctive ear mark, usually a small cut, notch, or combination of notches in specific positions on the ear, forming a unique \u201csignature\u201d for that farm.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Historically, these marks were far more than practical tools\u2014they were part of the identity and heritage of each holding. Generations of farmers passed down their earmark patterns, often recorded and refined over time. Because there was no central digital system, knowledge of these marks was carefully preserved in handwritten farm notebooks, estate ledgers, and local record books. Roedd adnabod cywir yn helpu i osgoi anghydfodau dros berchnogaeth ac yn galluogi ffermwyr i adfer anifeiliaid oedd wedi crwydro o\u2019u cynefin. Accurate recognition helped prevent disputes over ownership and allowed farmers to reclaim stray animals from common land. In many rural communities, knowledge of local ear marks was shared informally as well, becoming part of the unwritten social fabric of farming life.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Over time, official identification systems were introduced, and today UK law requires sheep to carry approved ear tags for traceability and disease control. However, traditional ear marking still holds cultural significance in many Welsh farming communities.
